Synopsis

Alexis Wittenberg has it all. She is a straight A student, a proud prefect, rich, girlfriend to the school jock and a star among her school friends. The only problem is that she is also a bully. Pretty, popular, and well-adjusted, Alexis finds that her life turns upside down when a familiar face becomes the new girl at their school. We soon find that Alexis hides and suffers from a great depression beneath a mask she creates to conceal her true personality. She buries her deepest sorrows and feels helplessness and loneliness. Adding to the burden, she is endlessly haunted by her inner demons, voices in her head that mock and ridicule her everyday. Alexis is forced to relive her painful childhood memories all over again when she realizes that the new girl was the girl who bullied her in elementary school. Alexis is infuriated and seeks to take revenge on the girl who destroyed her childhood life. But when a prank goes too far, Alexis feels she is losing everything and sets on a path of self-destruction. She is brought to the point where she would do anything to eliminate her opponent from her life, including suicide. Finally her two friends and teacher rescue her from herself and explain that the new girl was not the person who bullied her in the past. Alexis feels great remorse and sadness but soon learns to open up to her friends and teacher. The help which she greatly needed was always just right in front of her, she only needed to ask for it.

Theme

Recent occurrences of bullying have been given increasing amounts of attention due to the surprising and sometimes violent results. However, bullying is not only limited to male students. Research has shown that girl bullies are in fact increasing. Girls are just as aggressive as boys, but they act out in much more subtle ways. In our culture, girls are taught to be nice, which means not being in conflict, and being everyone's friend. This need to please leads to the more under-handed forms of aggression, because girls know they don't have to take responsibility for their actions.But the more friends girls have, and the more they try to keep those friendships trouble-free, the more aggression builds up under the surface.The effect of this "hidden aggression" is devastating to millions of girls, but is often invisible to parents. Many girls intentionally perpetrate acts of aggression that go unseen by parents and teachers.

About

Brie : Is anything actually real? I mean completely, unconditionally, no substitutes, just…real? Life…love… hope? Or is it just a game we play in our heads to keep us sane? To keep us from realizing reality. Or maybe we’re all just crazy. [Pause] Brie looks to the audience.

Brie : It’s funny how you meet people in this life, connect with them for like a split second, and then never see them again. Sometimes you wonder if they ever existed. They’re probably better off without me, though. Most people are.

Dr. Wilkins : 1 in 100 people will develop schizophrenia in their lifetime. It’s a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disorder. They may hear voices other people don't hear or they may believe that others are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. They may not make sense when they talk, may sit for hours without moving or talking much, or may seem perfectly fine until they talk about what they are really thinking. Because many people with schizophrenia have difficulty holding a job or caring for themselves, the burden on their families and society is significant as well. Like many other illnesses, schizophrenia is believed to result from a combination of environmental and genetic factors. [Paused as he looks at Brie] Let’s leave her now and check on the others.

In year 2007, our drama team presented a play that brought the audience to Brie's life and how she is suffering from schizophrenia, a disease that not many are aware of, at least not from this part of the world. Anyone with this kind of disease will normally misinterpret as 'crazy' and many of their family just give up on them. Here, we will be introduced to schizophrenia and go beyond to Brie’s world and how she views everything around her.

Synopsis

The story follows a 17 year old Brie, who grew up in a wealthy family. When she was 13, her mother died of cocaine overdose and her father sent her to a boarding school. There, she ends up attacking her own roommate. Her father and principal decide that it is best that she is sent to a mental institution. On hearing this, Brie refuses to go. But nevertheless, she is forced to. During her stay, she meets Sarah, a reckless mental patient, whom she runs away with from the hospital. Along the way, they meet Trey, an illegal drug dealer. Brie is lured towards drugs, just as her mother did. The three become friends and soon jealousy between Brie and Sarah to win Trey over grow intense. They end up fighting for him. Brie is knocked out in the process. She wakes up only to find herself back in the institute. She discovers that Sarah and Trey are mere hallucination. Finally, she diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Theme

Schizophrenia is a biologically based brain disease that seriously impairs a person’s ability to think clearly and relate to others. Someone with schizophrenia has difficulty between what is real and what is imaginary, and is often unresponsive and withdrawn. Although there is no known cause or cure, a majority of people with schizophrenia can lead a more ‘normal’ life with appropriate medication, therapy and support. Schizophrenia is often far from what people think it is. Unfortunately, the individuals with schizophrenia are the ones who suffer not only from this devastating disease, but just as much from the stigma that results from public misconception.

The Somnambulist - 2006

Intro

Seeing the issue of Black Metal, our nation is again attacked by this shocking issue that involved our teenagers. Using this genre of music, our teenagers are carried away to darkness prey and involved in activities that worries many, especially parents and education institutions. Thus again, our team had come up with this theme, a challenge to bring out the message to many teenagers, letting them see the danger they are going to put themselves into. The Somnambulist, the sleepwalker brings another interesting message behind this play.

Synopsis

Dillon, a problematic teen, grew up with a lack of care and attention. Because of his love for music and his fascination on a Black Metal Rock Star, he becomes addicted to Black Metal. He idolizes this Rock Star because he is everything he wants to be, but he does not realize he’s falling prey to a very dangerous trap, a trap that lies within his deepest sorrows, a dark abyss. Once, when the Rock Star was in town, he held a concert in his honour and to satisfy his greatest need, to be someone everyone looks up to and seeks attention. He was arrested because of his act. His parents argued to the point where his dad flied for divorce. Dillon blames himself for it. When the Rock Star has taken his own life, Dillon’s world comes apart till the point where he is flirting with suicide – he’s even written the note and it’s in his pocket. Now, the Rock Star appears in Dillon’s ‘sleepwalk’ to guide him from impulse to reason. Dillon confronts characters who are personifications of the mental and emotional turmoil which teenagers frequently go through. Conscience, dressed like a Puritan in running shoes (“…because you can’t out-run your conscience; she always catches up”) explains how the maturing teen is hard wired for impulse until the prefrontal cortex fully develops at about age 21. Inner Child, who grows to a teen before Dillon’s eyes, shows him that he can’t escape his past. Impulse is personified as Amygdala, a hulking, galumphing, character who bends Dillon to his will, simply by shouting emotional states that collapses Dillon into a frenzy of emotional exhaustion. But to wake up from this ‘sleepwalk’, Dillon has to battle Amygdala. The question is, will Dillon fall prey or rise from it all?

Theme

(1) Black Metal is becoming very popular among the teenagers in today’s world. Many youths are turning to Black Metal as solutions to their problems and ways to seek attention. They use the music to express themselves. They idolize the wrong person and wanting to follow their footsteps. What they did not know is that the satanic lyrics are pulling them deeper into their own sorrows, a darker abyss.

(2) Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds and the numbers are growing. Most of the common stimulus for suicide is unendurable psychological pain and frustrated psychological needs. The protagonist, Dillon is captive of his own dark fantasies. And like Dillon, others can be pulled back from their tunnel vision and see the big picture of life. They can see their problems in a larger context. They can realize freedom from the prisons of their own making. “The Somnambulist” can debunk, de-mystify and de-romanticize suicide. And when all that is removed from ideation, what remains is a person like the rest of us – with a tally sheet of dreams and disappointments, trying to measure up in the world.

Bang! Bang! You're dead.
In the eyes of the teenager

Kipland Kinkel was born to normal parents. When he was 4 years old, his family moved to Spain. He found trouble speaking Spanish and encountered difficulties with a school bully. Back home, Kip had hard time learning because of his dyslexic condition. While his sister progressed in school, he was held back a year and felt the disappointment in his parents and himself. He became more isolated when his sister went to college. When he entered middle school, he was of small stature and remained poor in his studies. He possessed no athletic schools so naturally, he was a target for bullies. Slowly, he began to develop a psychological shield to hide inside. He started hanging out with street gangs and had unsupervised access to the internet. The records showed that he found solace in and affinity to extremist lyrics, indicating an identity with violent ideas and concepts.

Kip’s world was becoming much too narrow and introverted. He began to be interested in bombs and guns and other weapons. His parents did not recognize his developing manure and gave in to his demands or wish for weapons. His developing criminal tendencies became manifest when he threw pebbles on passing cars and was arrested. Kip’s mother soon recognized the developing crisis in the family and referred her son to a psychologist who found out that Bill Kinkel (his father) was the missing person in Kip’s life. Kip soon was expressing violent behavior too readily but he underwent treatment for depression and it seemed to have helped a lot.

In high school, Kip got involved in a failed romance with a girl. This episode came at a time when a new phenomenon was sweeping American schools – Shooting. Kip immediately identified himself with it, and was heard to say how he would do the same thing. Things soon came to a violent climax and as they say the rest is history. He shot his parents and went to school and killed two other school kids and wounded 26 others. He’s now in jail serving 111 years.

One afternoon in New York, William Mastrosimone’s eldest son, who was 15 year old then, came home from school. He told William that as he walked into English class that day, waiting for the teacher, a kid had written: “I'M GOING TO KILL EVERYBODY IN THIS CLASS” on the blackboard. The kid who did it was apprehended. The incident occurred after the tragic shootings in Jonesboro, Arkansas, West Paducah, Ky., and Bethel, Alaska. The whole town was turned upside down by this little incident. The next day, William could not get any work done. That night, the famous playwright wrote the first draft of Bang! Bang! You’re Dead! Says Mastrosimone “I wrote it all at once. I wanted to address the kid in the audience who is contemplating violence, so I created a character who, at the start of the play, brags about his killings. I thought that would suck in the kid contemplating it.” It was such a coincidence that the infamous Thurston shooting incidents happened a few days after “Bang! Bang! You’re Dead!” was finished. Mr. Mastrosimone then donated his play to Thurston High and volunteered his services in getting it staged. Early in 1999, a cast of 13 Thurston students who had lived through the actual shooting premiered “Bang! Bang! You're Dead!” at a drama festival in Bend, Oregon. Since then, Mr. Mastrosimone has been overwhelmed with e-mail provoked by his play's far-flung productions — everything from questions about how to remove ketchup “bloodstains” from an actor's shirt to chilling exchanges with several students mulling their own acts of violence. Some confided that they had hit lists, and that they wanted to kill themselves, taking others with them. Says Mastrosimone : "They wrote that they had nobody else to talk to. They told me that they saw my play and it changed their minds. So, I know that we saved lives. But I knew this wasn't over, that we had scratched only the surface of a problem that was about kids planning to commit mass murder because they wanted to kill themselves.” Since “Bang! Bang! You’re Dead!” was premiered, it has been performed by schools all over the US and by thousands of schools globally.

Sung Siew Secondary School, Sandakan Sabah is no exception. In preparation for the divisional level drama competition, my school’s drama team adapted this play for a 20-minute production. We managed to win through to the national level which was held in Johor last August. We went upstage with only one goal in mind : To get the message out. In the end, tragedy lost to comedy but seeing the way the audience reacted, hearing the sniffles and seeing the way how many members of the audience wiped their eyes, it was truly rewarding. We were also encouraged by the number of teachers and students who came to tell us how it touched their hearts. This play is relevant to the situation we are facing with today’s schools. Even if we turn our whole school into security guard stations, and spot-check the contents of every backpack in school, what is in a person’s heart cannot be seen by those who are looking from the outside. “Bang! Bang! You’re Dead!” is a play that can be used as a powerful tool for prevention and intervention and to heighten our consciousness so that we may see tragedy before it happens.

After performing this drama, our aim in getting the message across was achieved. Even so, thoughts and questions kept creeping into my mind. What if this incident really happens in our school? What if I become a victim of the incident? Will I be taking psychotherapy sessions now? Will I suffer the incident for the rest of my life? Or will I be spared of the trauma and agony of the incident and be one of the dead? What if the perpetrator is my friend? Will I be able to deal with it? Will I be able to live a normal life after all that? I will ask why. Why would he do it? Why would he endanger lives of so many people? Why would he cause so much pain?

Fortunately for us, shooting incidents have not occurred in Malaysia before. Although this is so, we constantly hear fights, bullying, etcetera happening in our schools, sometimes resulting in death. Why do these happen? Is it possible that the perpetrator, like Kip, lacked love respect and discipline? Maybe he had sounded a number of alarms and signs but did those around him hear it? Even so, could they have done anything to prevent it? We may be very fortunate to live in a peaceful and harmonious community with a loving family to support us and with many promises in school and life, but some kids may not be so lucky. These kids usually become troubled kids. Their every movement, action and behavior is reflecting to their situation. These people usually seek attention and yearn for respect. We are looking at victims of the popular, the “IN” crowd. They are usually regarded as week and weird, to be laughed at, and not to be associated with. Teenagers are emotionally developing people and to be labeled and taunted like this often leads to emotional problems ad feelings of low esteem. Some may choose the suicide path, some may bully others in return, and others may choose to react violently against the perpetrators, Why is that we have all these problems in our schools and the teachers are rarely doing anything about it? By the lack of action against school bullies, we are actually asking for a Kip Kinkel incident to happen. I feel that the parents and teachers need to do more to curtail school bullies and I fear that a Kip Kinkel’s incident can happen in our school…..

“Bang! Bang! You’re dead” is a play that was written by the famous playwright William Mastrosimone. The play is available on the internet ( www.bangbangyouredead.com ) for free. This play was our last year’s school drama production and the team had won with this play through Divisional level, State Level and Zone level. They represented Zone ‘D’ to Johor Bharu for the National Level and won the first runner up. The team’s mission was to bring the message of school violence to the audience, to open eyes, to reach out and make a different. Teenagers are just children after all. They need guides and attentions. Although this play may not be the solution, but it was worth staged. The 2005’s drama team wants to thank all, especially parents, teachers, friends and individuals that had supported, contributed and sponsored throughout the production on this play. With your continuous supports, we had achieved to national level and brought the message to nationwide. Thank you.

ABSOULUTE DARKNESS. Curtain opens and the centre lights turn on, narrator stands in the front centre of the stage. Music plays.

Narrator : Good morning dear teachers and friends, ever heard of the Paducah Killer, the Jonesboro brothers, or the Springfield shooting incidents? (Pause) Well, it had happened in 1998 and 1999; and even just five months ago, when a student brought a gun to school and shot all his friends and teachers dead! Today, we would like to bring you on a journey through Josh’s mind while he is in prison. Here the story begins… where most other stories end…

The play was found by Tricia Chung, who is also our drama director and the leader of the team. She was browsing on the net looking for a play when she came across this play, written by a famous playwright William Mastrosimone. The script is available on the net for free. From a 40-minutes play, we adapted and narrated it for 20-minutes play to suit our drama competition rules. The play had gave us a deep meaning and throughout the production of this play, we had one thing in mind -to get the message out. Seeing effects of bullies and killing happened in schools, it has become a global problem. Why? Afterall these are children. What push them to the extreme to act the things that we do not expect them would do at the first place? Take a moment to think....

(Narrator enters and right stage lights on her. As she moves to the centre of the stage, right stage lights off and centre stage lights on, along with left stage lights still on.)

Narrator : My dear teachers and fellow friends, there’s nothing in this play that glorifies or glamourizes violence. It focuses on the lasting consequences of an impulsive act for the killer as well as the victims, family, school, friends and communities. You might think we’re exploiting the shooting but we’re here to get the message out. Although shooting has not happened in Malaysia, we want people to realize this could happen in any school in any form of weapons. Even if we turn our school into security guard stations, what’s in a person’s heart cannot be detected by those of us looking from the outside.

We hope this play can be used as a powerful tool for prevention and intervention to heighten our consciousness so that we might see tragedy before it happens.

SYNOPSIS

“Bang! Bang! You’re dead” is a play written by an award winning playwright, William Mastrosimone, uses the elements of shootings as a jump-off point for his cautionary tale about school violence. It is based on the tragic shootings in 1998 and 1999, one of it when a student opened fire in the cafeteria, killing two students and wounding 23 at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, near Eugene. Kip Kinkel, a freshman at the time, killed his parents at home and then went to the school, where he shot his fellow students. In this play, the audience is brought to the potential killer, Josh (in prison) whom harbors homicidal feelings towards others. With his terrible secret, Josh is pursued by the deceased like Greek Furies, forcing Josh to a catharsis, hoping Josh will have a purging of his animosities. The play will bring the audience to the dark side of Josh, of which he thought was his moment of glory. He sees how horrible and tormented his life will be. It may occur to him that a three minute murder spree is not worth a lifetime in physical and/or psychological hell. Josh sees himself and the dire irrevocable consequences of this fantasy, or if the victim’s families should find a catharsis in the course of the evening, that would be worth all the time, effort and expense of future productions.

THEME

We hear about school violence everywhere, when school is said to be the safest place a child could be in. With such danger occurring in school, we are all bonded by our anxiety that tomorrow morning a potential killer will rise up to act out his fantasy using us as figures in a video game. We will also be bonded by the fact that thousands of kids will be doing the same play about the same danger. There is hope that our awakened senses or heightened consciousness might see tragedy before it happens. It’s a slim hope, but it’s all we have at this time. We can only make the most of it.

Whoever Finds This, I Love You - 2004

Theme : Who to be blamed for the death of a 16 years old girl. She is the victim who trapped in the cruelty of the world with lack of love in her family and seeks it from her boyfriend who is abusive.

'Whoever finds this, I love you' is a title of an old song but using this title, inspires the story creator Ms. Latifah Y. E. to do this play for the production year 2004. With the help of Stephanie Lim, a form 5 student that year, she wrote the script of a play about a school girl that suffers from the trauma of her family crisis and the urge and needs to be like any other happy teens. Envy at her friends, the main actress named Angie, wishes she has the freedom to party with her friends and has a boyfriend of her own. With no friends to share her unhappiness, she expresses herself through her diary.

The story starts with a school girl played by the scriptwriter herself, walks from home passes through a park when she monologues of her frustrations about her family and school. She kicks onto something that she thought a stone, but instead is a book. She cleans it and opens to only encountered that it is a diary of a girl named Angie. She sits by a bench and starts reading it. On the left wing of the stage is the flashback of the diary. Lia is an unhappy girl. Her mother sews some clothes in order to get extra income for the family and her father is a strict man with alcoholic problem. Her parents always argue at home and she has to witness this. Through her diary, she expresses her unhappiness and wishes. One day, her classmate invited her for a birthday party and has helped her to lie to her parents in order for her to stay overnight at her friend's house. At the party, she has met with a mature man and has fallen in love with him. This man has influenced her to escape school and finally run away from home.

She is forced to work as a dancer in a club in order to support both her life and her boyfriend. She has only fallen into bigger trap by living with him. Her boyfriend has used and abuse her. Finally, she could not take the suffering and pains, she calls home requesting her parents to take her home. But it is too late, she is discovered by her boyfriend calling home and is strangled to death. Her parents came too late to only found her dead body.

The school girl who had read this diary, feels sorry for her and swear that she will do better in her life. She is grateful to have a loving and caring parents and takes the diary as a guide to her life, to avoid from falling into a wrong path as Angie did.

There are four scenes in this play : The living room, the park, the taxi stand and the bedroom. The stage is divided to two, the left wing as the flashback and the right wing as the diary reader.

The Sandakan Divisional Level English Drama Competition for Secondary School was held in Sandakan Community Centre Hall. Organized by Sandakan Education Department, along with St. Michael Secondary School, we lost to second place. The trophy won by St. Michael Secondary School with a play called "The Chair".

TUGU 2003

'TUGU' means statue. This play was created by Ms. Latifah Y. E. for the drama production in year 2003, with the help of the scriptwriter Stephanie Lim. The playwright concentrated on the element of patriotism that most of our teenagers do not have. With three statues of "Tunku Abdul Rahman, Hang Tuah and a soldier" the play focuses on one setting - the memorial park. In this park, unfortunate events happened. With the main actress as an old lady who works to sweep and clean the park, she complains that the park is 'dirty'. No one appreciate these three statues nor care for what they did to the country. They do not honour them but use the park to run their bad activities. The villains are :-

1. School students that come to the park after escape from school as their gathering venue. They change their clothing and hanging out with bad friends and adults.

2. Gangsters meet up here to do their business. Drugs trade and fights normally occur in front of these statues. The drug dealer sells their drugs to the drug addicts and when these drug addicts are captured deep into their fantasy of it, these gangsters would laugh and leave them be.

3. Prostitution. This park has become their meet up point. Their customers will come and go, at the end, these customers come back in with AIDS positive.

4. A girl dumps her unwanted child at the park, which later is found by police patrols.

With all these events, the park sweeper has claimed the park as 'dirty'. Feeling sad and depressed of knowing these, the sweeper monologues of her frustrations, but only these three statues are her listeners. She leaves the park sad knowing no one can do anything about it, not even these statues.

Her strong monologues has awaken these statues in taking the action into their own hands. They come alive and kill these bad villains, one by one, vanishing them from the mother earth. At the end of the play, the park is filled with laughter by the children and some old and young are doing their exercise at the park. The old park sweeper is smiling upon this, claiming now the park is clean. She proudly looks at the three 'tugu' showing her gratitude and honour.

This play symbolizes a deep meaning of patriotism. These memorial statues are put up in honouring them for their contributions to the country once before. They have done their part as responsible citizens that love their country, thus we too have to play our role.

With 15 students as cast and crew, the team was trained by Ms. Latifah herself. They went to Sandakan Divisional Level English Drama Competition held in Tiong Hua Secondary School and got second place, lost to SMK Elopura Bestari.
